Description

After 9 years of blood, sweat, and joy, we've decided to stop being vassals to the rent and buy Disgraça. We began this whole process at the beginning of 2024, and are now trying to find different ways of fundraising, to keep these beautifully weird catacombs on top of one of Lisbon's hills active for the years to come.

We have drawn up a one-and-a-half-year plan to secure, once and for all, this space that is so important to all of us. We've already done the first steps – on 19th of September we signed an agreement for the space to not be sold to anyone else, and put down 10% of the total amount. Now, it is time to raise our sleeves for the hardest part: we've got until the end of summer 2025 to raise the remaining 247,500 euros to secure the space, for the long-term sustainability of Disgraça and all the collectives that use its spaces.

The plan includes securing interest-free loans, fundraising events, a caravan tour all over Europe, non-state-affiliated grants, an online crowdfunding campaign on GoFundMe and, more recently, this LiberaPay campaign as we've realized that there might be folks who'd like to donate money on a regular basis, something which is quite of a hassle on GoFundMe. The more we can raise here, the quicker we can be rid of financial obligations and dedicate our time to supporting resistance struggles, learning from one another and organising together.

If you can't support by donation, here are some other things you can do:

  • We're looking for comrades willing to give us medium/long-term, interest-free loans. These loans will be essential for securing the space and will be repaid upon request with a 6-month notice period.
  • We're asking collectives (and folks who are both part of and not part of collectives!) who have been sharing space with us for the last decade to help us publicise this through your networks and affinity groups. We want to do this together!
  • We're going to organise various benefits inside and outside the space in the coming year. We invite people around us to help us organise these events and/or provide support during them (like helping with groceries, cooking and cleaning). We challenge other groups in solidarity with Disgraça to do the same in their geographies.
  • We want to make a caravan that passes through various anti-authoritarian spaces and festivals throughout Europe, to organise events and talks to spread the word and raise funds.

If you don't have any idea of what we're all about, keep on reading. And if you've got any ideas on how to help with the crowdfunding, do reach out to us at <disgraca@riseup.net>.

Love & rage.

About the space

Disgraça is an anti-authoritarian, horizontally organized, DIY social centre located on Rua Penha de França in Lisbon which has been running since 2015. For a lot of people Disgraça is a place to come to boogie down and hear their favorite bands and enjoy delicious vegan meals but at Disgraça there is much more going on! It’s a place for building community, mutual aid and organizing diverse struggles, from the broader anti-fascist fight to the local housing crises. It’s a space where you can just hangout or you can get involved. A place to be used as a tool and to create bonds in the long fight against the status-quo, authoritarianism, Capital and the State, while challenging racism, homophobia, transphobia, sexism or any vertical animal nonsense that gets in the way.

Disgraça has four floors of fun with loads of different spaces and forever unfinished projects.

Up top there’s Tortuga, the anarchist bookshop, which also has T-shirts and music plus a free food shop. Below there is the Freeshop, BOESG library and a screenprinting workshop available for all sorts of stuff.

Then there is the canteen; where all the black magic happens. World famous in Lisbon, the 100% plant based food at Disgraça is considered by just so many to be one of the best in town and is without a doubt one of the cheapest (because it’s donation ;) ). The secret? Well, there are no well kept secrets here except that anyone is welcome to share their tasty skills and learn new ones.

Show up. We'll hand you a knife.

A variety of radical films and documentaries are shown in the cinema room or dining space where also benefit events are held to support local and international causes.

Down below is the concert space where along with some great DIY international names many acts have had their first gig. At Disgraça all gigs have sliding scale prices, all the money goes to the bands' traveling costs, and like the rest of the space it’s open to all ages. Along with the concert space there’s also a rehearsal room & recording studio available to DIY and lesser known groups and artists. Right next to it we have our own workshop where we do all sorts of crafty stuff and we're also in the midst of building a gym open for the community, for self defense training and other activities.

We'll keep you updated on the projects were working on or have realized in the monthly newsletter. We are always working on new ideas and Disgraça is always open to proposals for projects, benefits, workshops, events or concerts. If you have one, hit us up and show up in our biweekly meetings.

Thanks for your support!
