LibreWXR is a free, open source weather radar service that anyone can self-host.
Description
LibreWXR is a weather radar and forecast service that pulls data from public meteorology agencies and serves it as map tiles for websites, apps, and dashboards. It runs on commodity hardware and requires no API keys or commercial accounts to be fully functional. It serves as a drop-in replacement for the Rain Viewer API.
The radar layer composites real-time observations from US NEXRAD via NOAA MRMS, Environment Canada MSC, EUMETNET OPERA across 24 European countries, CWA Taiwan, MET Malaysia, and MARN El Salvador. The forecast layer chains high-resolution regional models with ECMWF IFS as the global base: NOAA HRRR covers the continental US and Alaska, ECCC HRDPS covers Canada, DMI HARMONIE DINI and DWD ICON-EU cover Europe, Météo-France AROME Outre-Mer covers the French overseas territories in the Caribbean, South America, Indian Ocean, and Pacific, and SMN Argentina WRF covers the Southern Cone. Cloud cover comes from ECMWF, and severe weather alerts come from WMO with US-specific NWS integration.
Everything is written in Python, licensed AGPL-3.0, runs in Docker, and the source lives at github.com/JoshuaKimsey/LibreWXR. You can access documentation of this API at https://librewxr.net, including on how to switch from Rain Viewer to LibreWXR. The public instance of the API, matching the feature set of Rain Viewer, can be accessed at api.librewxr.net.
Support through Liberapay funds ongoing development and the public api.librewxr.net instance that lets people use the project without setting up their own server.
