We have no intention to paywall Omnipedia in any way, but keeping it running as live software that requires hosting, maintenance, and upgrades is a non-trivial amount of work and money year-round. Read on to get a sense of the hidden work involved in building Omnipedia and keeping it running.
Behind the scenes
While the origins of Neurocracy go much farther back, Omnipedia itself began life around early 2017 and took about two years of labour to create the initial content and software for the demo/prototype shown in 2019. Between then and the 1.0 release in 2021, we had to expand the content substantially and implement some surprisingly complex systems to handle our unique use-case while also completely rewriting Omnipedia from the ground up in the process. Between the 1.0 release and today, we've had to go through several major software upgrades with all sorts of unexpected things breaking, fix many bugs along the way, and even retrofit the entire UI so navigation between pages uses some JavaScript trickery when possible. All of the Omnipedia code and build process is open source so you can see it all for yourself.
What this will be used for
This will be split between our hosting costs and helping our sole web developer, UX designer, and devops engineer Matei Stanca pay their bills so they can continue to work on maintaining and improving Neurocracy and Omnipedia. If you'd prefer a one-off donation, they have a Ko-fi profile.
What this is not
This is not for funding new stories and artwork; those take a lot of work and coordination from the writers and artists, meaning that the limiting factors are not financial.
